About Our Artistic Director and Conductor

Deborah L. Brown debuted as Artistic Director and Conductor of Whatcom Chorale with the 2009-2010 singing season.

She had served as the Assistant Director for the preceding six seasons.  Deborah is also Choir Director at First Congregational Church of Bellingham, United Church of Christ, and is an accomplished conductor, teacher, and soloist.

Deborah received her degree in voice and lifetime teaching credential in music from the University of California at Irvine. She has worked with numerous conductors, including Howard Swan, Maurice Allard, Martial Singher, Henrietta Pelta, Natalie Limonick, Michael Palmer, and Linda Frost. After attending the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, on full scholarship, Deborah toured and performed in opera and concert in Europe and the United States. Deborah recently completed an intensive vocal pedagogy course and studies voice with Charles Peterson, Whatcom Chorale's previous Artistic Director and Conductor.

As the director of award-winning choirs in schools in California, on Waldron and Shaw Islands in Washington, and at Squalicum High School in Bellingham, Deborah instilled a love of choral music and vocal excellence in her students. She directed a choral program in California that included six choirs involving more than two hundred and seventy-five students each day.  While at Shaw Island, she co-directed the Shaw Island Touring Opera Company, developing original operas each year. Deborah serves as guest clinician for choral festivals and solo vocal competitions in Northwest Washington.  She was the director of the combined choirs for the Whatcom County Interfaith Choral Festival in February 2009.

On a lighter note, many athletic singers have been surprised to find their conductor wielding a tennis racquet in her work as tennis pro at the Bellingham Tennis Club. Deborah can also be spotted surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking and snowboarding.
